For me, commitment to sociological inquiry and STS is not only about the constant critique of inherited realities. Today, perhaps more than ever, it means actively participating in debates about the natural and social worlds around us: researching them, understanding them, and opening up new possible pathways.

This is what we do in the FAMOS EU Project.

We ask: what are the relations between humans and the sea? Under what conditions would societies desire to live on the sea and with the sea? And how can these assumptions be meaningfully embedded into technological and engineering design?

FAMOS is developing floating archipelagos — but we take seriously the questions of with whom, for whom, and under what conditions such futures should be imagined and built. That is why we create spaces for co-design, dialogue, and reflection. Because even floating islands need grounded sociology.

Our Polish workshop in Gdynia and Norwegian workshop in Grimstad are now behind us. Italy — Piombino — and Cyprus — Nicosia — we are coming!
